What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), or also known as Search Engine Marketing (SEM), is a method of driving highly targeted search requests to a site by achieving a high search engine ranking. SEO helps to ensure that a site is accessible to a search engine and improves the chances that the site will be found by the search engine.

Why is Search Engine Optimisation important?

Most traffic to a website comes from search engines, Google, MSN, Yahoo etc are now the primary method of navigation for almost all Internet users. If your site is not registered on a search engines database then it cannot be found by a search engine. Therefore you miss out on visitors who search for your product / service in a search engine.

The higher a web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user. It is common practice for Internet users to not click through pages and pages of search results, so where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more traffic toward the site.
